What environmental justice mapping tools mean for the waste industry
The main U.S. landfill operators, WM, Republic Services, and Waste Connections, all produced updated versions of their sustainability and environmental justice reports this year, with differing degrees of data disclosure, analysis, and promises. The US EPA's EJScreen, an open-source environmental justice mapping and screening tool, was used in all three studies. The EPA incorporates publicly accessible data into 12 environmental indicators, seven socioeconomic indicators, and 17 environmental justice indexes, which are then displayed at the preferred geographic scale. The final report displays these indicators and indices at the chosen region, including particular points; in the case of these environmental justice reports, company-specific sites. Notably, WM shareholders adopted a resolution to perform a civil rights audit and update environmental justice statistics in May of last year.
