The Supreme Court just unleashed a flood of lawsuits against Big Oil
The US Supreme Court has ruled that lawsuits against oil companies can proceed in state courts, after the firms sought to move them to federal courts, which they perceived as more favourable. The lawsuits have been brought by nearly two dozen cities and states alleging that fossil fuel firms deceived the public about climate change, in violation of state consumer protection laws. The suits had been stuck in legal limbo for six years. The legal action is based on allegations that ExxonMobil knew about the dangers of burning fossil fuels since 1977 but publicly cast doubt on the science and blocked legislation.
