Reckoning With the Loss of Black-Owned Land
The National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) addresses the loss of Black-owned land in a panel discussion following the screening of the documentary "Gaining Ground: The Fight for Black Land." Black Americans once owned millions of acres of land after the Civil War, but today, nearly 90% of it is no longer in their hands due to violence, eminent domain, and discriminatory government actions. The discussion at NAR NXT, The REALTOR® Experience, emphasized the impact on generational wealth and urged real estate professionals to educate themselves about heirs' property, estate planning, and the Uniform Partition of Heirs Property Act. The panel highlighted the story of Bruce's Beach as an example of land restitution and called for a range of solutions to address this issue, emphasizing the role of REALTORS® in making a positive impact.
