It’s Time We Put an End to the Carbon Capture Farce
Ana Baptista and Dana Johnson argue in Common Dreams that the Biden administration's focus on justice and equity must extend to environmental justice communities, which have historically borne the brunt of discriminatory policies. They criticize carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), utilization (CCUS), hydrogen hubs, and direct air capture projects for lacking transparency and disproportionately targeting environmental justice communities. The authors assert that while CCS is promoted as an emissions reduction method, it actually enables further reliance on fossil fuels. They call for an end to the farce, emphasizing the need for real change and sustainable solutions, such as transitioning to clean, renewable energy like wind and solar, to address the climate crisis without perpetuating discrimination and pollution in vulnerable communities.
