Texas doesn’t own firefighting planes or helicopters There’s a $500 million plan to change that

After the devastating 2024 Texas Panhandle wildfires, which burned over a million acres, state officials are considering a $500 million investment to establish a state-owned aerial firefighting fleet. Currently, Texas relies on private contractors for wildfire response, causing delays in deploying aircraft to remote areas. The proposal, led by the Texas Division of Emergency Management, includes purchasing four fixed-wing aircraft, two helicopters, and a command aircraft. Supporters argue that immediate access to aerial firefighting resources could significantly reduce wildfire damage. However, no official action has been taken yet to implement the plan.
