Michigan updates data sharing tool on environmental justice

Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy has updated its MiEJScreen tool, which maps how environmental contamination intersects with health and socioeconomic factors across communities. The tool, first launched in draft form in 2022, aims to make environmental data more accessible to advocates, officials, and residents, helping them understand the impacts of pollution. While praised for improving data accessibility, advocates like Juan Jhong Chung from the Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition emphasize that action beyond information is needed to address health disparities and environmental issues. The state encourages continued public feedback but has not committed to further actions tied to the tool.
