The Nation’s First Commercial Carbon Sequestration Plant Is in Illinois. It Leaks

The ADM-operated carbon sequestration facility in Decatur, Illinois—America’s first commercial site of its kind—has reported two leaks, sparking public concerns over safety and transparency. The plant, which aims to store carbon underground to mitigate emissions, has faced backlash after the EPA confirmed leaks occurred in March and September 2024. Although the EPA reported no water contamination risk, local leaders, including Decatur’s city council, question ADM’s lack of disclosure and the implications for future carbon capture projects, particularly near critical water resources like the Mahomet Aquifer. With further CCS expansion planned in Illinois, communities and environmental advocates call for more stringent regulations and transparency.
