‘Global weirding’: South Texas farmers deal with extreme heat, drought

Farmers in South Texas are struggling with extreme heat and drought, forcing many to reduce their farmed acres and shift to drought-tolerant crops. Larry Stein of Texas A&M AgriLife Extension notes the increasing difficulty due to insufficient rainfall and depleting wells. This drought is considered by some to be worse than the infamous 1950s drought. Water restrictions and dry wells have led to decreased crop yields, impacting the local economy. Farmers are experimenting with resilient crops like nopales and sesame to adapt. Despite the challenges, some farmers, like those at the San Antonio Food Bank farm, benefit from consistent water sources but still face unpredictable weather conditions.
