DOE advisory panel offers ‘sobering’ view on hydrogen

Summary

The Department of Energy's advisory committee presents a concerning assessment of the progress of the "clean" hydrogen industry, suggesting it's insufficient to meet U.S. climate goals by 2050. The National Petroleum Council's report indicates that current federal policies lack the momentum to drive the necessary expansion in hydrogen supply and demand. While initiatives like hydrogen hubs funded by the bipartisan infrastructure law show promise, significant additional support is required to achieve net-zero carbon emissions targets. The NPC offers specific recommendations to boost hydrogen production and purchase, enhance public acceptance, and support research and development efforts. Moreover, the report highlights challenges in reducing emissions from the natural gas supply chain, emphasizing the need for collaborative solutions and policy advancements to mitigate methane and carbon dioxide emissions.
