California Inspired a Wave of Plastic Bag Bans — With an Unfortunate Loophole

California’s 2014 plastic bag ban unintentionally led to increased plastic waste due to a loophole allowing thicker "reusable" plastic bags. Though aimed at reducing single-use plastics, these thicker bags often contributed more waste. Last month, California updated its law to ban all plastic bags at checkout, offering only paper alternatives. However, at least five other states, including Connecticut and Oregon, still allow these thicker bags, undermining their plastic bans. Efforts are underway in states like Oregon to close this loophole. Advocates argue that fully eliminating plastic bags is crucial to reducing plastic pollution.
