A 20-year struggle for environmental justice—and a public park—in one California city

Richmond, California, a predominantly minority, low-income community, fought a 20-year battle for environmental justice, culminating in the creation of a protected public park at Point Molate. Once home to a Chevron refinery and a former Navy fuel depot, the site faced numerous development proposals, including a casino and luxury housing, both of which were rejected by the community. Local activism, combined with legal challenges and political support, secured a $40 million deal to preserve the land. The park, part of California’s 30x30 initiative, will be home to wildlife and recreational areas, offering a much-needed green space for the city.
